About Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Red Wine

Chateauneuf-Du-Pape is an area in the southern Rhone region of France.

It is an area designated by the wine regulators in France for making wines with defined rules and regulations that helps  to maintain the high quality of wines from this area.

The wine is a blend of different grapes, but the most important grape is Grenache.

Grenache is a thin skin grape, that makes wines with lots of juicy ripe red fruit flavors that are superbly delicious and yummy!

So when we see Chateauneuf-du-Pape on the label, it tells us the following:

  • The main grape used in the production is Grenache. This grape is the most important grape in this part of the region.
  • It will most likely be blended with a few other grape varieties, as it is a traditional for blending, similar to what is in Bordeaux wines.
  • The blending grapes which are most famous to go along with the main grape Grenache, are Shiraz (Syrah as called in France), and Mourvedre.
  • The wineries are allowed up to 13 different grape varieties in the blend, but most choose to use the top 3, Grenache-Shiraz-Mouvedre.
  • The designation of Chateauneuf-Du-Pape itself is a quality determinant, meaning to say this is one of the top wines of the world and a premium wine.
  • The wine is going to be full-bodied, with ripe juicy red fruit flavors, complemented by spices, and are complex in style.
  • Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines can be aged in for between 10 years to 20 years easily.

"Chateauneuf-Du-Pape translates to 'New Castle of the Pope', (Chateau = Castle), (Neuf = New), (Du = Of) and (Pape = Pope)
