The Hospices de Beaune (Hôtel-Dieu) is a historic charitable foundation in Burgundy, France, founded in 1443 by Chancellor Nicolas Rolin and Guigone de Salins.
Initially built as a Flamboyant Gothic "palace for the poor" to treat victims of war and plague, the hospital functioned for over 500 years until 1971.
Over centuries, grateful patients and wealthy benefactors donated exceptional Burgundy vineyard plots to the institution. Today, the estate owns over 60 hectares of prestigious Grand Cru and Premier Cru land.
Every November, the foundation hosts the world's most famous charity wine auction, selling its current vintage in barrels.
All proceeds directly fund the region's modern public hospital system, medical research, and historical preservation.
The original medieval building now operates as a world-renowned museum, seamlessly bridging centuries of medical history, fine art, and legendary winemaking.
ABOUT THIS WINE
This Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru "Cuvée Madeleine Collignon" 2022 aged by Pierre Duroché is a rare, prestigious red Burgundy made from grapes grown in a historic vineyard gifted to the Hospices de Beaune
A man named Jean Collignon gave a small piece of this grand plot of land to the Hospices de Beaune charity in 1976. He named the parcel in loving memory of his mother, Madeleine Collignon.
More than half of the vines in this specific blend were planted back in 1947. Old vines give the wine deep fruit flavors and smooth, silky tannins.
The 2022 vintage of this specific wine was harvested and pressed by the Hospices team, then poured into raw, un-aged oak barrels called pièces. These individual barrels were put up for auction to raise money for the hospital's modern medical facilities.
The raw barrel was transported to Domaine Duroché’s private cellars in Gevrey-Chambertin. Pierre Duroché runs a respected family winery, Domaine Duroché.
